Fall After School Update,
By Alfred Gibbs, Teen Team Leader

The After School Program here at the Roberts Family Development Center is a warm environment that stresses the importance of academics while creating a fun and safe place for kids to learn and develop. The kids at the center are divided by their respective grade levels. We work with nearly 100 students daily. We recently opened satellite sites at Hagginwood Elementary and North Ave. Elementary Schools, in North Sac and Del Paso School Districts respectively.

At each site, homework is our fist priority because we believe; in order to be successful one must work hard at it. We want all our kids to be successful in whatever they plan on doing in life. In addition to focusing on academics we realize they must also be well-rounded. Some of the activities they have participated in the during past three months have included, making puppets out of socks, learning the life cycle of a butterfly, and being challenged through the arts, Our teens have also been introduced to “The Time” which is where a student picks a topic to discuss amongst the group.

We have also created an incentive program, where students are rewarded for completing homework, displaying good behavior, being inspirational and being leaders. They also have the opportunity to learn how to do research by using the World Wide Web through our Computer Lab/Café.

Some students have received mentoring support from members of the GMAC Finance Co., participating in the Junior Achievement Finance Program which gives them insight into needed job skills and the world of finances. Special thanks to the employees of GMAC, and especially Jennifer Rogness, GMAC’s Diversity Manager for helping make this program successful.

Along with all these wonderful activities the kids have access to a full computer lab, a drum class takes place three times a week, and the kids enjoy a number of games. From playing football to playing checkers the Roberts Family Development Center has it all. In the near future the kids will get a chance to make a documentary on what happens here at the Center.

Our services provide a holistic approach focusing early childhood and family education, economic empowerment and technology. We provide children a venue where values are stressed and working hard is commonplace. These are just a few of the things that are happening at the center with more to come.

So come on out and join us, we would love to have you.
