What a partnership! Sacramento CORAL site, Roberts Family Development Center, teamed up with Sacramento State University and Woodlake elementary school to host the center’s first “Family Math Night”. The programming consisted of 26 interns, all of which are teachers in the Sacramento Unified School District. The goal of the event was to discover the fun in practicing math concepts as a family. In addition to the activities held at the center families also received math games to take home and practice together. The event provided a very creative and dynamic approach to skill building as well as math concept familiarity.

Kids were able to develop and nurture math skills while participating in a “hands on” approach. Families were pleased as

well because the event accommodated their request for extensive math reinforcement. So, all in all, the event was extremely successful at bringing our family goals and academic goals to fruition.

The efforts of RFDC are based around the idea of family achievement. So, a large part of the programming that takes place at center includes family empowerment through participation. Parents are encouraged to be assertive in their children’s academic progress and to help create an environment that suggests that we are indeed a village raising our children together.
