The
First RFDC, CORAL " Spoken Word Extravaganza" was a smashing success
24 young poets from RFDC and three guest poets from Freeport elementary graced
the stage. All the students seemed a bit tense and nervous, being that some
had never performed in front of such a large audience, but they shook the
stage fright jitters and it was "lights, camera, action!" Most of
the students recited hand picked poems, while other read their own original
works. The topics included sports, love for the sun, historical poems, and
a young man had the audacity to write and recite a piece about the Los Angeles
Lakers, fortunately he made it out of the building safely. All in all the
poets were excellent, the audience energetic, and their was great food too.
Truly a very positive evening for all who attended, showing us all the extreme
power of the spoken word. the event was planned by the RFDC La Familia Parent
Council. The group met on a regular basis for two months prior to the events,
ensuring that the evening would be a success. Community partners such as MATRIX
ARTS and Rhino Design created the decorations and Sacramento Theatrical Lighting
provided theater spotlight. All of the participants had a wonderful time and
we look forward to doing it again!
