I was always told, “everything happens for a reason”. Going to Tennessee for the March Training and Orientation for the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools ® summer program, I didn’t know what to expect. I was told we were staying on an actual farm. I am not an outdoorsy person, so this was a shock to me! This will be my first summer as a Site Coordinator for CDF-Freedom Schools ®. Mixed feelings and emotions came over me at an altitude of 35,000 feet, realizing my life would change forever. But for the better. Once I arrived in Tennessee and stepped foot on the Alex Haley farm, I felt a sigh of relief. The Alex Haley farm is one of the most peaceful places I have ever been. From the beautiful landscape to the quaintly decorated lodge, the entire experience was unforgettable. We had the opportunity to stroll through the Langston Hughes library and participate in trainings and spiritual renewal at the Riggio-Lynch Chapel. Nestled in the foothills of the Tennessee mountains near Knoxville, the Alex Haley farm connects young leaders and activists with the glorious heritage of the struggle for freedom. I am so thankful for this opportunity and I am ready to serve this summer! -Kamille Byrd, Site Coordinator
